The Ancestrial Spirits

Preface

When the Veil thinned and the spirit-realms revealed themselves to mortal sight, the truth of origin was laid bare. None of the supernatural castes were strangers from beyond; they were children of the realms that had always walked beside the waking world yet were always out of sight. From these realms rose the Ancestral Spirits. These were timeless custodians of memory and essence that were entrusted with the safeguarding of both their domains and those born of them.

The Ancestral Spirits are not gods, nor are they rulers. They are the voices of remembrance, the recorders of both triumph and ruins, and they are the keepers of each caste’s sacred lineage. Their change is a simple one: that nothing of their people is lost to silence and that the ties between mortal vessel and the spirit-realm remain strong and unbroken.

The role of the Ancestral Spirits first and foremost that of the keepers of memory. Every word, every wound, every oath ever made is preserved within them. They carry the collective histories of their castes, their victories and betrayals, and the lessons that no book could bind in word.

They are guardians of the living and of the connections of balance between the waking world and their spirit-realms. Their very essence is woven into the fabric of the spirit-realms. The wounding of a realm echoes through them as pain; the fall of one of their own stirs their mourning.

They are guides of the living. When the boundary between worlds grows thin the Ancestral Spirits may reach across and into the waking world. Their voices come as visions, dreams, or whispers in the firelight beneath a moon-touched sky to those that listen.

They are also judges of legacy. They discern what of their past is passed down and what is allowed to fade into distant memory. To the reckless, they grant only silence, but to the worthy they can bestow wisdom, strength, or the weight of memory itself.

To walk as one of the casted is to never walk alone. Behind each and every step, the Ancestral Spirits echo in silence and song, ensuring no path is unmoored from its beginning. They are burdens to some and yet blessings to others. Without them, however, the supernatural worlds would drift rootless, unanchored to the realms that birthed them. They are memory given form and are not guardians of dominion, but of remembrance. So long as they ensure, the castes endure with them.
