The Cursed Bloods
Preface
There exist, within the territories of The Crossroads, certain lineages that neither answer to the Veil nor bow to the governance of the Spirit-Realms. They are not spirit-casted, nor are they bound by pact, rite, or ancestral communion. Their origin lies elsewhere; older, fractured, and fundamentally incompatible with the order of this world.
They are known collectively as The Cursed Bloods.
Unlike those chosen by the Primal Spirits, the Cursed Bloods bear no blessing. Their existence is neither gift nor reward, but an affliction carried within the blood itself. They are remnants of an older corruption, one that survived the destruction of worlds and crossed into The Crossroads through means still beyond understanding.
Two principal manifestations of this curse have been reliably documented: those who bear the Curse of the Wolf, and those who bear the Curse of the Vampire.
Though their forms differ greatly, both are expressions of the same fundamental truth:
The curse does not grant power.
It demands a price for it.
Chapter I:
On Their Nature
The blood carried by the Cursed is unlike that of any known creature. It does not resonate with the Veil, nor does it respond to the influence of the Spirit-Realm. Physicians, alchemists and Wardens alike have failed to determine whether it should be considered living tissue, magical corruption, or something altogether separate from both.
Where the blood of the spirit-casted harmonises with the realms beyond, the blood of the Cursed remains silent.
It is unnaturally cold.
Unnaturally resilient.
And seemingly resistant to forces that would otherwise influence body, soul or spirit.
This corruption grants extraordinary resilience and capabilities, but it also isolates its bearer. The Cursed cannot call upon the guidance of the Primal Spirits, nor do they possess ancestral voices to temper instinct or ambition. Their strength comes entirely from the curse itself; a force that grows more potent as its bearer survives, matures, and learns to endure its demands.
Unlike many supernatural afflictions, the curse does not remain static. Over years, and in some cases decades, it begins to awaken further manifestations within the blood. These awakenings differ between individuals, but all represent the curse deepening its hold over both body and mind.
No two Cursed Bloods develop in precisely the same manner.
Yet all eventually discover that the price of greater power is an ever-greater struggle against the curse that grants it.
Chapter II:
The Turning
The creation of another Cursed Blood remains one of the least understood and most dangerous phenomena known to modern scholars.
Unlike spirit-casted, whose nature may be inherited through bloodlines or bestowed through ancient rites, the curse cannot be taught, granted or willingly shared. It may only be endured.
All recorded transformations share several common observations:
The subject must stand upon the very edge of death.
The blood of a Cursed Blood must be introduced into the failing body.
The corruption must overcome the dying flesh before death claims it.
Only an established elder of the bloodline possesses blood potent enough to sustain this process.
What follows is not healing.
Nor is it resurrection.
It is the complete rewriting of the body's natural state.
Most subjects perish within hours as the corruption tears through every organ, vessel and nerve in violent succession. The body either accepts the curse completely, or destroys itself attempting to resist it.
Those few who survive often awaken profoundly changed.
Common observations among newly turned individuals include:
Severe memory fragmentation.
Violent compulsions and uncontrollable hunger.
Episodes of psychological instability.
Partial or involuntary transformations.
Extreme physical exhaustion during the first weeks of survival.
For this reason, even among the Cursed Bloods themselves, the act of creating another is regarded with caution. Many consider it an act carrying immense responsibility. Others regard it as an unforgivable arrogance.
Few willingly attempt it.
Fewer still succeed.
Chapter III:
Separation from the Veil
The defining characteristic of every Cursed Blood is their complete separation from the Spirit-Realm.
Spirit-Casted draw strength through living connections to realms beyond the physical world. The Fenrah answer the Umbral Wilds. The Umbrith hear the River of Ash and Bone. Every spirit-casted lineage exists because something ancient continues to answer them.
The Cursed receive no such answer.
Attempts to bind, bless or commune with them through spirit-based rites have repeatedly failed. Wardens frequently describe standing in their presence as experiencing an unnatural absence; a place where the Veil simply refuses to respond.
One Warden's account records the sensation simply as:
"It was not silence. Silence still belongs to the world. This was absence, as though the spirits had chosen not merely to leave, but had forgotten the place entirely."
This separation grants unusual resistance to many forms of spirit-based influence. Blessings often diminish upon contact with the cursed blood. Spiritual compulsions struggle to take hold, and certain forms of magical domination prove unreliable.
Yet this isolation comes at a cost.
The Cursed cannot seek guidance from the Primal Spirits.
They cannot forge pacts.
They cannot strengthen themselves through communion with the realms beyond.
Where spirit-casted possess ancient allies, the Cursed possess only themselves.
Chapter IV:
The Blood Itself
Study of cursed blood remains exceptionally dangerous.
Samples removed from living subjects display several unusual properties that cannot be replicated artificially.
Recorded observations include:
A colour significantly darker than human blood, often appearing black under dim light.
An unnaturally cold temperature regardless of the subject's condition.
Sluggish movement that defies expected biological behaviour.
Resistance to separation through ordinary alchemical methods.
Microscopic movement suggesting continual internal activity despite complete isolation from the host.
Some physicians have argued that cursed blood appears less like a bodily fluid and more like a living organism existing within the body itself.
When introduced into an uninfected individual, the blood behaves as both poison and catalyst.
It does not merely spread.
It attempts to replace.
The recipient survives only if their body successfully yields to this violent reconstruction.
Most do not.
Chapter V:
Origin Theories
No confirmed origin for the Cursed Bloods exists within any surviving archive of The Crossroads.
Among the prevailing theories are the following:
They are remnants of worlds destroyed before the founding of The Crossroads.
They represent the collapse of an older magical order that no longer exists.
They are survivors of a metaphysical catastrophe whose laws differ fundamentally from those governing the present world.
They are living echoes of an ancient corruption that should have perished with the realities from which it came.
One particularly controversial theory proposes that the Cursed Bloods are not unnatural because of what they are...
...but because they were never meant to survive the crossing between worlds at all.
If true, the curse itself may remember laws of existence that the current world has long since forgotten.
Chapter VI:
Warnings and Observations
The presence of a Cursed Blood should never be dismissed lightly.
Though many live among ordinary society without incident, their condition remains volatile, unpredictable, and capable of catastrophic consequences if allowed to spread unchecked.
The danger lies not solely in their abilities, but in the blood they carry.
Current recommendations issued jointly by the Wardens and the Medical Order include:
Avoid direct exposure to fresh cursed blood.
Exercise extreme caution when treating suspected cases.
Report confirmed manifestations to both local law enforcement and the Wardens.
Never attempt to replicate the Turning under any circumstance.
The curse has survived longer than any known civilisation.
No evidence suggests it has ever become less dangerous.
Closing Remarks
The Cursed Bloods stand apart from every recognised supernatural lineage within The Crossroads.
They are neither chosen nor blessed.
They possess no patron among the Spirit-Realm.
They draw no strength from ancient pacts.
Instead, they endure a corruption that reshapes body, instinct and identity with every passing year.
Whether they should be regarded as monsters, victims, or survivors remains a matter of fierce debate among scholars.
Yet one truth remains beyond dispute.
The blood remembers.
Whatever ancient power first gave rise to the curse may have vanished with forgotten worlds, but its legacy continues to walk among us.
And so long as the blood endures...
...the curse endures with it.
